According to Justice Minister Oleksandr Lavrynovych, Ukraine is unlikely to challenge the judgment passed by the European Court of Human Rights in the Tymoshenko v. Ukraine case.

MP Serhiy Kivalov of the ruling Party of Regions said that the European Court’s judgment did not oblige Ukraine to release Tymoshenko.

“In its judgment the court assessed compliance with the Human Rights Convention during her detention and pretrial custody. The judgment does not concern the indictments on which she was convicted,” Kivalov said.

“May Day celebrations have passed in Ukraine without serious violations of public order,” the Interior Ministry’s PR office reported on Thursday.

According to the report, almost 400 mass events dedicated to International Workers' Day took place in 240 cities, towns and villages countrywide. About 200,000 people took part in the events that were organized by the Communist, Socialist, and Progressive Socialist Parties as well as local government agencies.

The largest number of people that gathered for May Day events was reported in the Crimea: over 80,000. In the capital city Kyiv about 10,000 people took part in mass events.

Over 55 hundred police officers and 650 Interior Ministry troops were on duty guarding public order across the country, including 16 hundred in Kyiv, the report said.
